The State of the Nation's Food Industry report 2024
This year's State of the Nation’s Food Industry report highlights the performance of major UK retailers, Out of Home businesses, and food manufacturers and looks at what steps they are taking to help us shift towards more healthy and sustainable diets.
These sectors play a vital role in shaping our food environments, impacting on our eating habits and the climate.
The report focuses on 11 metrics and benchmarks 36 companies against a range of criteria to assess who is leading the way and what more needs to be done to help fix our unsustainable, unhealthy and unfair food system.
Key findings
Five companies are responsible for over 80% of TV ads for snacks and confectionary aired before the watershed - despite claiming not to advertise to children.
Only one in four major UK food businesses has a healthy sales target and discloses data on the healthiness of their sales.
42% of businesses don't transparently report on their progress towards their net zero and Scope 3 emissions targets and 17% have seen their emissions increase rather than fall.
