Convenience stores

The Scottish Grocers Federation’s Healthy Living Programme is supporting convenience stores across Scotland to sell more fruit and veg. They have an excellent toolkit to guide convenience store owners to achieve the Gold Standard in achieving excellence in healthier options. The accompanying produce guide also provides excellent material for store owners. In 2016, the USA’s National Association of Convenience Stores launched a new toolkit titled, “Ideas That Work to Grow Better-for-You Sales”, and they include evidence-based tactics to try.

Supermarkets

The Food and Brand Lab (part of Cornell University in the USA) have developed a retailer self-assessment score card which you can use to score your own retail environment.

Plating Up Progress is a Food Foundation project that assesses the progress being made by major UK-operating businesses within the food retail, foodservice and restaurant chain sectors across key themes relating to the transition to a healthy and sustainable food system. Their 2020 toolkit offers a useful guide for assessing and tracking food business performance on health, sustainability and social inclusion. The Access to Nutrition Initiative has also publicly published their methodology for the UK Retailer Index 2022.
