I have extensive experience working in the Greater Horn of Africa and the UK with non-governmental agencies, the United Nations, as an independent consultant, and with voluntary organisations. I have participated in short-term emergency health and nutrition interventions as well as long-term development work with a key focus on food security. Since returning to the UK, through my social policy, research and campaign work with Citizen Advice, I am familiar with the complex issues concerning the underlying causes of poverty and food insecurity within the UK.
After 30 years teaching in comprehensive schools I was part of the team that ran the North Islington Education Action Zone until my Parkinson's symptoms forced me out of the education system. I went on to own and run a huge bakery, which made quality old fashioned British sponge cakes in slab form until being forced out of business during the recession. Having lost everything I sofa surfed for two years and before scraping together enough money for a small semi detached in Thanet. I then set up a tiny artisan company producing the sugar free cereal bar Bar 15. After major brain surgery I'm no longer strong but determined to make life and meals better for the community.
