The State of the Nation's Food Industry report 2023
The State of the Nation’s Food Industry report shines a light on the major retailers and Out of Home businesses within the UK and what steps, if any, they are taking to help us shift towards a more healthy and sustainable diet.
Acknowledging the important role these sectors play in shaping our food environments and therefore eating habits, the report uses 10 metrics to assess which companies are leading the way, and importantly, what ethical businesses should be doing to help fix our broken food system.
Key findings
No major UK food retailer or service business has set targets and discloses the % of sales of both animal and plant-based proteins.
Just 1% of advertising spend goes towards fruit & veg - compared to 33% on confectionary, snacks, desserts and soft drinks.
25% of food sector workers have experienced #foodinsecurity - yet supermarket bosses are being paid up to £4.8 million more than shop floor workers.
