Our reaction to parliament vote on two-child benefit limit
The Food Foundation is calling on the new Government to take swift action to tackle child poverty and food insecurity.
It comes after an amendment to the King's Speech, which would have abolished the two-child benefit limit, was defeated in the House of Commons last night.
Reacting to the news, Joss MacDonald, The Food Foundation's Public Affairs Lead, said: "Now it is clear that the King’s Speech will not contain reference to abolishing the two-child benefit limit, we are looking to the Budget in the autumn for action to taken on the distressing levels of child poverty and food insecurity across the United Kingdom.
"The question of whether to ensure all children are properly fed in our society should not be a difficult one.
"Measures such as the abolishing the two-child benefit limit, the expansion of the Healthy Start scheme and giving more school children a free hot meal at lunchtime are essential to providing all children with the best possible start in life."
