Why the food system should be a top priority for policymakers
The Food Foundation hosted an event at the House of Commons to highlight the role the food system can play in helping to reduce the burden on the health service, boost economic growth, and tackle the climate emergency.
Aimed at new MPs following the General Election, it featured speeches from prominent politicians including Baroness Sue Hayman who is a Minister at the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. The event also heard from Munira Wilson MP, the Liberal Democrat frontbench spokesperson for Education, and James Bethell, Lord Bethell, the former Conservative Health Minister.
Nearly 60 people, including parliamentarians, civil servants, academics, businesses and representatives from NGOs attended, and were introduced to our Nourishing the Nation manifesto, 10 Cost Free Policies, and Introductory guide to the food system.
They also watched a video message from our Food Ambassador and disability rights campaigner Dan White, about the struggles of putting food on the table.
A carer for his disabled daughter, he was ironically unable to make the event due to issues with social care services.
