About this project
New research from the SOAS Food Studies Centre focuses on how digitalisation has impacted marginalised populations, as well as how digital food assistance practices interact with political and economic processes.
Since 2010, successive governments have pursued a digital strategy across welfare, food assistance, and local government services. In addition, supermarket vouchers and apps are increasingly common as part of food assistance schemes.
While aiming to bring benefits and efficiencies, digitalisation also risks excluding some of the most vulnerable populations and exacerbating food insecurity and intensifying pressure on food charities and community spaces across the UK.
As the Government progresses its food strategy and seeks to end mass dependency on emergency food parcels, our aim at the Food Foundation is to apply these research findings to policy opportunities across the UK, ensuring that future food policies are fair and inclusive for all.
