NHS waiting lists soar following lockdown

The disruption to the NHS as a result of Covid-19 continues to impact on waiting times for more routine services and operations. More than two million people on the waiting list – 50% of the total – have been waiting over 18 weeks, the highest since records began in 2007. Some 83,000 have now been waiting over a year, up from 2,000 before the pandemic. However, there were some positive signs of recovery following lockdown. Hip and knee operations, visits to A&E, and cancer operations all rose compared to April and May, although all still remained below pre-pandemic figures and the figures seen this time last year.
